HOW KENYANS IN THE DIASPORA CAN BUY (OR NOT) LAND IN KENYA

Purchasing land for kenyans living in the diaspora comes with challenges. Many kenyans have lost money through family, friends and brokers pretending to assist them in the process of acquiring their dream home or investments.

FAMILY MEMBERS / FRIENDS

Based on trust some kenyans abroad send money to their family members back home to make payments of a piece of land for their future home or for investment purposes. When they come back home home, surprise – no land was purchased, its not in the agreed area or it’s there but it is in the name of the family member while they wanted in their names.

SUGGESTIONS

If you decide to buy through your family

-involve a third party, a friend, a real estate consultant or a lawyer

-make sure they do the necessary procedures with the ministry of land

-insist on the names to appear in the tittle deeds

-if possible send the cash to an bank account for accountability

REAL ESTATE AGENTS/CONSULTANTS

The other safe way of buying your dream land in Kenya is through real estate agents.

There are many real estate companies  with lots of different products.

SUGGESTIONS

-only deal with well known real estate companies

-Send a friend or a family member to see their offices

-prefer those with local agents in your country of residence

-request someone to go see the land you wish to buy

-request for a sales agreement between you and the company

-Pay directly to the  company’s account and demand a receipt
